At BKM Inc. I had an opportunity to design and test prototype fuel injection systems. The intention was to develop direct injected 2 stroke engines. Eliminate the typical unburned hydrocarbons by injecting directly into the combustion chamber after the exhaust port was closed. We used fuel pumps capable of 2000 psi. This resulted in extreme atomization when the injector nozzle valve opened. Sounded like a small gun going off due to supersonic velocity of fuel droplets. Fascinating, but extremely dangerous with respect to fire, explosions and inhalation of fuel. Viva la bicyclette! I also functioned as a general purpose engineering consultant. My favorite side job was to prove who was responsible for the lifts failing at a new, articulated bus repair station built for BART. It turned out that an accountant had removed the chapter on "active cathodic corrosion protection" from the engineering spec in order to shave cost. Ultimately, the entire floor which was five feet of reinforced concrete had to be jackhammered to replace the hydraulic pipes which had corroded prematurely due to the lack of "active cathodic corrosion protection". Moral: you can't let accountants make engineering decisions!
