About Sam Perkins

I am proudly neurodivergent having been diagnosed with Dyslexia in 2009, ADHD in 2023 and Autism in 2024. This forms an interesting and important part of my identity and provides a neurological foundation regarding how I operate.In 2009 I began studying and exploring the ethical and philosophical frameworks surrounding Buddhism. This is important because it not only helps to explain how I view the World, but also what drives me.In 2010 this process led me to a simple but powerful manifesto: "Until everyone would be willing to trade places with anyone, there is work to be done."This has and continues to act as an overarching framework to support decision-making in both my personal and professional lives. As such, I am motivated by the role appropriate technology can play in delivering sustainable, scalable, and meaningful solutions to complex challenges. I am passionate about animal rights and the rights of disadvantaged communities around the world.I have more than 15 years of experience in the academic, humanitarian and private sectors. Through this broad and diverse set of opportunities, I have developed a varied and adaptable set of skills, knowledge and experience.At the centre of this is the human-centred and participatory approach I take to the identification of problems/opportunities and the development of solutions to these. I believe identifying the right problem/opportunity is paramount and should be prioritised before any solutions are considered. This translates from strategy development to the development of technical engineering solutions.Over the past 10 years, I’ve occupied senior leadership roles in the not-for-profit and private sectors, and have not only developed but become very comfortable with my core mode of operation in these roles.I consider myself transparent and authentic in terms of how I operate personally, the way I appear and how I work with others. That being said, it comes with man flaws and the need to have the right people around me if I am to contribute best in a team.I have a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Tasmania and Cambridge University. I also completed a Postdoc with Hydro Tasmania and have lectured Fluid and Thermodynamics and Communication and Design at the University of Tasmania, where I received a teaching award.I am excited about how innovation and future trajectories in technology, policy, regulation and market-based approaches can shape the future of our food system and lead to long-term positive social, economic or environmental outcomes for people and the planet.
