Doctoral ResearcherNorthwestern University 2007 - 2013Doctoral Thesis: Proper control of torso muscles are important for performing almost all activities of daily living, yet there is a lack of research regarding how they are impaired after an individual survives a stroke. To investigate this topic, I met with clinicians and stroke survivors to subsequently design and fabricate a novel multi-directional electro-mechanical device that allowed the testing of multiple hypotheses. The results localized muscular dysfunction, suggested a rethinking of how the brain controls trunk muscles and how clinical interventions may be altered to deliver a more targeted intervention. -
Research AssistantNorthwestern University, Feinberg School Of Medicine 2005 - 2007Undergraduate Thesis: Ligamentous injuries to the elbow are common in pitchers. The contribution of forearm muscles to protecting the elbow ligaments is not understood. Collaborating with surgeons and clinicians, I implemented a miniature measuring device, force sensor and motion tracking system to quantify this contribution. We clearly demonstrated that contraction of certain muscles on cadaveric specimens relieved the most vulnerable ligaments and should be strengthened to prevent injury. -
