I am a passionate research scientist with a significant focus on big data analysis and machine learning as methods to understand problems prior to developing effective, efficient, and valuable solutions. I completed my PhD thesis which focused on the use of n-dimensional descriptors to describe protein sequences and creation of an in silico method of directed evolution to produce functional de novo proteins. This has led to success not only in the creation of functional de novo proteins with a 60% success rate amongst tested proteins but was also able to perform an evolutionary simulation in less than a day based on tested conditions. This work is currently under review for publication. During these studies, I also undertook numerous other projects that have been incorporated into numerous upcoming publications including the identification of new mitochondrial transcriptional regulators within Mus Musculus by cluster analysis of RNA-seq data.Since October 2020 I have been working as a Research Associate and during this time have created new tools to produce relevant, high quality data visualisations for various projects, trend and cluster analysis leading to the identification of previously unknown relationships within the mammalian transcriptome and correlation of complex datasets to identify relationships. I have also undertaken ongoing laboratory projects to produce further de novo functional proteins based on newly performed evolutionary simulations. Throughout this and my PhD I have developed extensive bioinformatics skills and have experience trimming, aligning and analysing next generation sequencing datasets, performing differential expression analysis and analysing ‘omics datasets.I can implement centralised and decentralised applications and am competent in several programming languages with particular emphasis on MATLAB, R, and Python and have developed and deployed code in both desktop and HPC environments. I also have significant project management skills gained initially from my career prior to returning to university to transition into a scientific career and subsequently being built upon. Having worked in both scientific and management fields I have been able to develop the communication, organisation, technical and conflict management skills to effectively manage a project to deadline meeting deliverable dates throughout while contributing to a team environment.

  In this position I am undertaking additional experiments and analysis to support publications being submitted. I have also undertaken significant new projects such as creating new tools for the design of small molecules to target any protein site with high specificity, designing and expressing further de novo functional proteins to expand evolutionarily conserved families as well as producing a new method to correlate miRNA data to mRNA expression data that has produced significant insights into prostate cancer progression. I have additionally provided high level analysis services and visualisation to many additional projects that have identified previously unknown gene function via use of clustering and trend analysis on transcriptome seq datasets.
