I was new to the world of housing data & tech and often had many questions about function, process, terminology, and more, and Sam was eager to give helpful and patient responses, never annoyed or condescending. I was honored when Sam asked me to provide feedback on his blog analyzing landlord portfolio size and behavior, which once published, went viral shortly thereafter. That blog is just one example of Sam's ability to ensure that his research is understandable and approachable as well as highly compelling and relatable. In addition to his solo work, I observed him building trusting relationships with external stakeholders via his engaging and deeply knowledgeable co-facilitation of housing data tools trainings, active participation in tenant organizing coalitions, and commitment to attend public actions. He had very clearly defined responsibilities fitting squarely in his data and engineering fields, but he fearlessly took on community engagement duties as well, both when called upon and out of personal interest. While I was not his direct supervisor, it was clear to me that his workload was quite expansive, yet he carried out his work, from the smallest tasks to bigger picture strategy, with a commitment to quality, underpinned by a principled vision of democratizing his often very elite and inaccessible field. In addition to the work itself, Sam's humor, warmth, and easy-going demeanor made him a joy to work with. I have the highest confidence that Sam will excel in all of his future projects and offer him an unwavering recommendation."
