I have a multiple subject teaching credential with CLAD. I student taught 2nd grade. This was followed by 15 years of teaching 1st grade with San Francisco Unified School District. I taught 2nd grade for 1 year at Emery Unified School district, which serves primarily low income students of color and ELL students. I now teacher kindergarten for Berkeley Unified School District, which is a full inclusions district. I have experience working in after school homework programs and summer camps for K-8th students.I teach using a social justice lens and am dedicated to having a culturally and linguistically diverse classroom. I have been involved in social justice work/activism focused on racial injustice and LGBTQ discrimination. Some leadership positions I have held were: head teacher at a K-8 after school program, establishing a social justice committee at my former school, grade level liaison, and union rep. for an elementary school site. I have a lot experience with differentiating instruction for both struggling students and students who are working above grade level. I have a lot of experience over the years doing small group intervention with struggling students. I believe that we all learn in different ways and believe in the theory of multiple intelligences. I think students retain information more from hands on experiences. This is why I offer my students as much project based learning as possible. I have had trainings in PBIS, restorative justice practices, and UDL strategies. I actively use all of these daily in my classroom. I believe when you educate a child, you are not just offering them academic information. You are teaching students how to be a positive contribution to the world. Academics is just one part of it. It is equally my job to focus on the social/emotional aspect of a child.
