I worked with Thiess Pty Ltd on the QCLNG project in Chinchilla however I am based in offices in Brisbane. I'm heavily involved in the controls and support department of the job working with the planning team and a lot with the project management software ‘Envision’.Primavera (P6) is the planning and scheduling tool that Thiess used on the GCLNG project. I was given the challenge of learning all about the program and then asked to implement activities for the construction of a Field Compression Station (FCS). After generating a schedule for a FCS, I felt very confident that I understand the necessary work required at site and basic timeline of activities.‘Envision’ was a new piece of software that Thiess had started to implement. This meant that there were a number of problems both at site and in the office that needed to be solved. I would always try and take it upon myself to find the solution to these problems with my own initiative or seek assistance when it was needed to learn more. Working on the support team, many questions were asked of us about the software and I was able to confidently answer them and find a solution. At stages I was in charge of the exception reports for 14 sites. This meant applying many new excel functions to make the data display what is relevant to management and the client. I have built a large knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Excel. My skills have had to be put to the test whilst also learning new aspects to create desired reporting for the project. After I got used to the ‘Envision’ system, I was asked to make an hour presentation at the Thiess induction center. This was a really good experience as it proved to me how much I knew the system and could present it and answer any questions behind it. I felt my supervisors had a lot of faith and trust in by knowledge and ability behind the software.

Undergraduate Engineer
I worked at a MACA iron ore mine project site called Mt Dove, about 2 hours outside Port Headland. I mainly worked with the crushing crew, but also got the opportunity to work with the mining, and drill and blast crew. I was involved with the successful installation and commissioning of the crushing plant at Mt Dove.Through the coaching, encouragement and support of my supervisors, I was given the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the control room, essentially running the crusher. I enjoyed taking on this responsibility with the support of my crew and felt that it showcased showing my leadership potential. At some stages, such as shift change, I was the only one there to operate the plant. This meant doing maintenance, plant checks and starting the whole plant myself. This required me to show initiative, be innovative and to work independently. I felt it was a great show of trust by my supervisors to leave me to operate an entire crushing plant on my own. I was also fortunate enough to get a chance to work with drill and blast, loading a shot whilst learning about the process of blasting and different explosives.Usually the roster for MACA was two weeks on one week off. My last swing at Mt Dove I volunteered to do a 26 day swing which meant I had to be involved in a personal risk assessment regarding the potential hazard of fatigue due to the extended roster. This affected me physically, socially and mentally. Physically, I pushed myself to always come into work fit-for-work and give it my all. Socially, I kept close contact with everyone at camp, my friends back in Brisbane and my parents. Mentally, I needed to keep focus on every job and stay alert to ensure there was no risk of harm for me or others. I am proud to say that I achieved my goals and completed the swing without any safety incidents and whilst maintaining my value to the Mt Dove team.
