Transportation Planner at the Mid-East Commission, a regional Council of Governments that provides planning, economic development, resilience, aging and workforce development services for five counties in northeastern North Carolina. In my role as Transportation Planner, I serve as Director of the Mid-East Rural Planning Organization (RPO).The Mid-East RPO is one of 18 RPOs in North Carolina, and covers Beaufort County, Martin County, and the non-MPO areas of Pitt County. MERPO is governed by two boards, the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) and the Technical Coordinating Committee (TCC). The TAC is seated by various elected officials from each of our three counties, and the TCC is composed of County and Municipal staff throughout our three-county region.MERPO is a forum for NCDOT, Local Governments, and the Public to discuss and plan future transportation projects. Every two years, MERPO staff will work with the TCC, and the TAC to plan and develop projects to submit in NCDOT’s Strategic Prioritization cycle. Aviation, Bicycle & Pedestrian, Ferry, Highway, Public Transit, and Rail projects are submitted in each cycle by our RPO to compete for a spot in the State Transportation Improvement Program, a ten-year funding and construction schedule for thousands of transportation projects across North Carolina. In addition to our Strategic Prioritization duties, MERPO also works in close coordination with our local governments and NCDOT in the development of long-range transportation plans and feasibility studies for specific projects.
