I often struggle to answer when asked what I do for a living. There doesn’t seem to be a phrase or title that quite fits. “I helped create and administer the most in-depth sales training program within the US insurance industry” doesn’t quite fit on a business card or email signature.But when my young daughter recently asked me what my job was, I didn’t overthink it—it just came out:I make boring things interesting.There’s an old adage that is often repeated, particularly in our sales course orientations—very few actually seek out a career in insurance; most of us come from very different backgrounds and industries. I definitely relate to that. I’m a lifetime movie buff, with a terminal degree in “Entrepreneurial Digital Cinema.” Time-out. Picture, if you will, a split-screen of my point-of-view of multiple casual partygoers, concerned family members and peers—all asking in unison—“What can you do with THAT?...”Alas, I was introduced to the insurance industry—in an entry-level position—to secure financial security as a soon-to-be father. After one year, a corporate opportunity arose where I could tap into my unique, creative background to enhance a one-of-a-kind insurance sales training program. And it is here that I have found my purpose. I strive to combine my left-brain analytical processes, right-brain creative side and a dash of (geeky) humor to create sales training content that is informative and entertaining. My mentor often reminds all trainees, however, that 30% is understanding the concepts; 70% of an agent’s job is successfully conveying that information to the general public. Allowing personality and humor to pierce through intimidating contract jargon to achieve these goals is a fun challenge that I embrace each-and-every day.
