Visitor Experience Team Member
I currently work as part of the VE team at the YMT, where I work across all three sites – York Art Gallery, Yorkshire Museum and York Castle Museum. At all three sites, I welcome visitors and serve them at admissions, selling tickets and doing Gift Aid, making sure they know their way around the museums and addressing any concerns and feedback they provide regarding their visit. I also work in the gift shops, restocking shelves and serving visitors here as well. In both roles, I promote the YMT as an organisation, informing visitors about our offers or any upcoming events to maintain public interest.Alongside admission and retail, I interact with visitors in the galleries to discuss the artefacts on display and their interpretation. Occasionally, I deliver scripted talks about artefacts and topics related to the galleries as well to engage visitors more effectively. I also patrol the galleries to ensure that visitors stay safe during their visit and adhere to security protocols. Likewise, I enforce fire safety protocols in the case of an evacuation as well.In addition, I also work as part of the Gardens Team in the Museum Gardens. Here, I help the team with gardening and planting the area, tracking visitor numbers, tidying and picking up rubbish and ensuring that visitors follow H&S as well.
Blogger
On my blog, I write posts about my writing journey for my upcoming book, 14 Days in Peru, documenting the challenges and achievements and sharing tips and advice with other budding writers. The blog allows me to hone my writing and researching skills whilst also allowing me to learn new skills like SEO, photography and website building. It also allows me to engage with other like-minded people by talking about not only my writing journey but also topics we have a mutual interest in. I hope that this will help me to improve my communication so I can reach out to others more effectively.
Customer Experience Team Member
I assisted the CE team with the operation of the venue before, during and after each performance. Some of my duties included:• Ticket scanning• Ushering• Serving food and drinks out to patrons in the auditorium via our DAS (Delivery At Seat) service• Working behind the bar and at the kiosk• Assisting patrons with any concerns, such as finding their way to their seats or accessibility around the venue
Visitor Operations Host - Interactive @ Jorvik Viking Centre
At Jorvik, I dressed up in period-accurate costume and interacted with visitors throughout the day. Drawing upon information provided by the YAT and my own research on the Viking-Age period, I worked alongside my colleagues to make the interpretation of artefacts on display as accessible as possible to all visitors, regardless of age and background. My role also involved helping visitors make their way around the attraction and offering assistance when needed.Preshow, Gallery, Pod & Coins – these were the four areas where I interacted with visitors the most, offering interpretation of the artefacts and displays where appropriate. In preshow, I explained the Coppergate Dig and what archaeologists found, as well as showing visitors what it is like conducting a real excavation. On Gallery, I talked to guests about the artefacts on display; on Pod, I showed some artefacts up close and discussed them in depth; on Coins, I showed visitors how the Vikings minted their coins. I also give 5–10-minute talks to schools and groups in all four areas as well.Queue – here, I worked alongside another colleague and admissions to batch visitors into two queues - one for prebooked tickets and the other for walk-up. I addressed any questions visitors had about opening times, prebooking tickets, directions and any other concerns and queries. When there were schools/groups, I also gave them a 5-minute welcome talk to prepare them for their visit. Caps On/Off – here, I helped visitors get on and off the ride safely, enforcing H&S rules and alerting the technical team to any issues via radio to ensure the ride keeps running smoothly.
Waiting Staff
At Tennants, I served guests, showing them to their seats and preparing them some glasses and a jug of water whilst they ordered their food. I also served food out to them, answered any questions and offered assistance where needed. Afterwards, I cleaned up and resat tables ready for the next guests. On night shifts, I again served food out to guests at events and cleaned up glasses, plates and tables to maintain presentability throughout the night.
Seasonal Worker
At the Forbidden Corner, I mainly worked in the café area, where I stocked up food and drink shelves, worked on the till and took orders from visitors whilst also working behind the counter where I could serve them hot food. I assisted my colleagues in cleaning up the seating area, serving food out when ready, alerted my line manager when we were short on stock and cleaned dishes in the kitchen.Outside the café, I also patrolled the garden, checking for any litter, emptying rubbish bins, making sure all garden features were working correctly and reporting any faults to my manager via radio. I also helped out guests who struggled with finding their way around or who got lost/separated from the rest of their party. Occasionally I dropped the (subtle) hint on how to find all the features. In addition, I also worked in the pottery shed, where I also served and made food and drinks to guests who had just finished their journey around the garden. Finally, I also checked and cleaned the gift shop and toilets to make sure everything was neat and tidy, ready for opening.
Guest Host @ The Blackpool Tower Dungeon
At the Dungeon, I ushered and batched visitors into groups of up to 30 before they began their tour in the Dungeon. Here, I interacted with visitors, answering any questions and assuring any visitors, both young and old, if the experience appeared too scary. I also used this opportunity to prepare guests, especially newcomers, for their experience, telling them what to expect without giving too much away. In addition, I also used this as a chance to tell visitors about the other Dungeon attractions and events going on throughout the year to promote the brand and encourage interest.
Fairground Operations
I worked as a ride operator at the theme park, ushering guests and helping them to get on and off the ride safely whilst enforcing strict H&S measures. I also collaborated with my colleagues to report any issues with the ride to the maintenance team to ensure smooth operations. In addition, I covered Lunch shifts for my fellow colleagues to ensure they could access their break, and interacted with guests about any concerns or queries they had about the ride or park.
