As regional process specialist for the Middle-Netherlands, I make sure that changes in the high voltage grid (and there's a lot of them) are correctly translated to the systems and processes that help us keep the lights on. This way, I contribute to the electrification of the Netherlands and towards building a more sustainable energy system.

During the traineeship, I work on three assignments of half a year each, at different departments. 1. Grid Field Operations: maintenance and construction work in the high voltage transmission grid. I help TenneT to further develop initiatives with regards to digitalization, improving safety, and a more efficient use of available resources to accelerate the energy transition. In doing this, I work both from the regional office of Area West in Gouda, as well as from the main office in Arnhem.2. System Operations - Transmission Services: operation of the grid. Here, I work on analysis and visualisation of (measurement) data about voltage and reactive power. The goal is to gain a better insight in this and set up regular reporting in order to be able to maintain a proper balance in the changing grid. For this assignment, I live and work in Bayreuth for half a year, where the TenneT's German main office is located.3. Energy System Planning - System Outlook: anticipating the future energy system. I contribute to the development of scenarios for several purposes, from grid investments in the next ten years to the 'finish line' of the energy transition in 2050.

Comparing the environmental impact of various solutions for congestion on the electricity grid, so that room for clean energy can be created in a responsible manner. Grid flexibility is necessary to facilitate the energy transition. Based on Environmental Life Cycle Assessments, I give advice on the role that battery storage and grid investments may play.
