About Sam Warner

Do you ever get that blood-warming thrill of 'whoa...we can do that?' Gesture-based technology. Robots opening doors and sensing their environments. Data organization as algorithms that turn ever-changing, viscous data into not traditional graphs but physical objects that humans can intuitively look at and understand. Even just a few years ago, touch screens. Things that get your stomach churning and your brain buzzing in a dozen directions with the myriad of industries that our tech could take us and teach us how to touch. That feeling of tumultuous possibility is what got me started with a career in technology five years ago. With a thousand rivers to ford over the next few decades alone where tech is concerned, the idea of ever fully mastering my craft is laughable. I can only hope to forge a relationship with programming that leaves me never wanting to.I'm a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Ohio, having received a double major Bachelor of Arts degree in Film Production and German in December 2016. I studied in Salzburg, Austria for two semesters to improve my German, continuing a family legacy of studying abroad and hosting foreign exchange students (my family hosted 5 while I was in middle and high school). I received two awards in German excellence from BGSU: one for accomplishments in first year German and, after skipping a year due to my collaborative and self-structured study skills, accomplishments in third year German. During my time at university, I also participated in the making of eight films, worked full time, and maintained a 3.67 GPA. My GPA from the two years of high school I spent attending college full time instead was 3.8. (In the German education system, this means I had an average overall grade of about 1,7. The larger the GPA = smaller the German grade = the better one's work was.)My years of academic overachieving left me wanting a career that matched it. I attended a coding bootcamp in early 2018 to help propel me into the world of programming. Since then, I've had work experience in a number of web development ecosystems (Java with Spring, C# with .NET, Ruby on Rails, TypeScript with Angular, and PHP with Laravel). I would love to learn more.

Listed skills include Java, Css And Html, Javascript, Sql, and 31 others.

Engineering Mentor

Freelance

Cleveland, Oh, Us

Engineering Mentor

Self-Employed

Most recently, in fall of 2023 I spearheaded a volunteer project to help tech bootcamp graduates improve on engineering and team skills and concept comprehension over the course of a month. Worked via one on ones and via group activities both asynchronously and synchronously. I taught and/or guided them through: ► Git: git etiquette/hygiene, git merges ► Appropriate pull request creation and review ► Call, read documentation for, and maintain APIs ► Work with cross-functional teams ► Transform app requirements into an ERD for a relational database ► Write and use bash functions and aliasesI also created a Kanban board of contextualized tickets with minimal task dependencies to enable independent and asynchronous work across time zones and flexible schedules. The app we made allows users to create and save tours of cities using the Google Maps API.Beyond that project, I mentor students as they consider coding bootcamps, attend them, graduate from them, and enter their first jobs in the industry. This has included participating in formal and informal panels, offering resume feedback, lending insight into the industry, emotional support, critiquing pitches, pair programming, mock interviews, scholarship research, and project-based technical mentorship. I'm passionate about wealth equity, building resources with underrepresented and underserved communities, and a minimum livable wage, and I see tech as a viable partial means to those ends.I have worked informally and formally with students and recent graduates from the University of Texas, the University of California, my alma mater bootcamp Tech Elevator, and Google's Grace Hopper Institute. I've helped around 20 early-career movers since 2018. This doesn't include some very lovely people I've gotten to help within my employers' companies, like Terrence Bell. (Scroll down to the bottom of my LinkedIn to see his recommendation letter! He's so sweet.)

Software Engineer

Lakewood, Ohio, Us

Full-stack developer on a fully remote product team that built and maintained a virtual platform for medical research via life science advisory boards and collaboratives. We worked on our large, finely aged codebase very independently with a heavy research emphasis for one year and moved into Agile teams the next.Took great pleasure in creating tooling to minimize friction and improve UX for internal users. I love to help people and make their lives more pleasant. ► Communicated needs to management, held them accountable, and appreciated incoming feedback and accountability in turn ► Participated in Agile rituals using Jira and Confluence in a cross-functional team (a designer, a product owner, one or two quality assurance analysts, two or three other engineers, and an engineering tech lead). These included preparing and estimating upcoming business-defined tickets, daily status check-in, and retrospectives every two weeks to review what worked or didn't in our process and team well-being. ► Contributed to documentation on code functionality and technical decisions, including extensive technical research in advance of implementing a new feature ► Provided timely PR and tech research feedback to teammates, including on topics such as avoiding scope creep and following appropriate design patterns ► Used tickets and PR feedback as a jumping point for deeper learning and the chance to hear diverse perspectives ► Provide adequate handoff information for manual quality assurance, such as "this code is also used in X unexpected place in the site" and "watch out for this kind of a mishap based on the logic of the code". Collaborated with them as needed to ensure they had all the resources and data they needed and the opportunity to ask me questions ► Wrote unit tests and took on occasional miscellaneous production bug tickets

May 2020 - Apr 2022

Full Stack Software Engineer (Contractor)

Short term, part time contractor role at a small remote-first SAS organization. The app we developed allows real estate professionals and local municipal government workers to record zoning and neighborhood boundaries to display properties to the public and property developers.Collaborated on a three-person team to migrate geolocation mapping features from using vanilla JS Riot tags to using Vue.js components. Some of the features I reworked and business impacts I made were: ► Administrative users can draw custom areas on a map provided by the Google Maps API ► Color coded and persisted these boundaries for all users ► Displayed legends and labels for those boundaries in administrative and non-administrative views ► Worked with polymorphic classifications of individual businesses and property types to filter results by category and inclusion within certain controllable boundaries via toggling visibility ► Implemented the desired pre-designed paper print view of all content for a given property

Mar 2020 - May 2020

Web Developer

Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Us

► Acted as a primary contributor on a successful pitch and slide deck to a potential client ► Helped craft and test dashboards that created customer-facing financial insights (written in Angular, TypeScript, and D3) ► Wrote and maintained internal APIs for consumption primarily by javascript frameworks, both sync and async ► Wrote an Azure function for sending email notifications ► Called on third party APIs along the lines of SendGrid and Stripe ► Created Vue widgets as needed to integrate with a third-party CMS platform, an ASP.NET MVC 5 application, and a relational database ► Managed data import and distribution processes, usually involving JSON and/or XML ► Wrote, maintained, and followed appropriate design patterns for code in an MVC framework for numerous clients in subindustries such as ecommerce and marketing ► Wrote semi-complex SQL queries to numerous relational databases ► Fixed production bugs as needed and generally contributing to sites' maintenance ► Wrote unit and integration tests for all of my pull requests as well as for others ► Wrote and testing internal libraries ► Utilized source control and CI/CD via Git and Azure
