More than 60 million forcibly displaced refugees and internally displaced persons are living without reliable connectivity. The communities they live in sometimes lack digital networks and infrastructure for connectivity to be possible; in other cases the connectivity that is available is too expensive. This lack of reliable connectivity negatively impacts refugees’ ability to access vital information, communicate with loved ones, access basic services, and empower themselves.What is also clear is that for organisations such as UNHCR to effectively innovate and improve the quality of services they provide, a connected refugee population is a necessity. This will unleash innovation for new service delivery models for communicating with populations, responding to their protection needs and delivering humanitarian services. Of particular significance is the potential enhanced connectivity holds for empowering communities, promoting self-reliance through improved livelihood opportunities.
