Founder & CeoTatum Robotics Sep 2021 - PresentTatum Robotics aims to offer people with deafblindness, a historically underserved community, their first independent communication tool. Tatum is an anthropomorphic robotic system to sign tactile sign languages —the primary and often only communication method of the ~150 million individuals with servere deafblindness worldwide. Disrupting the field centered on braille, this will be the first independent communication system to incorporate signing culture. -

Physical Therapy & Assistive Design Co-OpPerkins School For The Blind Jul 2020 - Dec 2020Watertown, Massachusetts, UsWorked with intellectually and physically disabled students to help support individual treatment plans and develop assistive devices. • Aided more than 20 students in the Perkins Lower School (aged 5 -15) with wheelchair transfers, balance, postural support, etc.• Understanding the difficulties of these students, I worked to adapt common toys and devices used by the children to improve the ease and efficiency of everyday tasks. • Developed new 3D printed tactile symbols with Braille labels for students to utilize in the classroom.• Collaborated with a non-profit in India to develop a new school for the blind by conducting interviews with Perkins staff to understand facets of Perkins (scheduling, symbols, equipment, RSPs, training, assistive design, etc.) essential to student success. -
Research Assistant In Monaghan Regenerative Medicine LabNortheastern University Sep 2019 - Jun 2020Boston, Ma, UsDirected research investigating the nerve dependence of limb regeneration, specifically in the axolotl salamander. • In an effort to identify and characterize neurotrophic factors (NTF) responsible for supporting the proliferation of blastemal cells during the early phases of regeneration, transcriptional changes were analyzed using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and Click Chemistry, focusing on previously identified NTF candidates. • Conducted a series of proteomics experiments investigating genes associated with histological and transcriptional changes after injury, focusing on the dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord.• Designed a fixture to image regenerating limbs, and completed simulations of the regenerating limb bud. • Experimented with 3D printing, casting, and molding to design replacement microscope imaging tubes to have the refracting index of glass. -
Research And Development AssistantMurray Maxwell Biomechanics Laboratory At The Kolling Institute Of Medical Research May 2019 - Aug 2019In a small team setting, assisted engineers and scientists in developing protocols and experiments for FDA submission.• Developed an outline for FDA submission and risk management reporting by utilizing FDA guidance and reaching out to FDA directors for confirmation. • Lead cadaveric patella and quadriceps harvest and assisted in animal tissue harvesting to be used for biomechanical testing.• Adapted SolidWorks models of cryo-clamps to be utilized with specific tendons and existing mechanical fixturing setup. • Helped create an automated mechanism to measure the cross-sectional area of irregularly shaped tendons. This method is to be used on the next batch of 800 tendons, saving the team approximately 2 minutes per sample.

Soft Tissue Product Development Engineering Co-OpMitek Sports Medicine Jun 2018 - Dec 2018Worked with R&D staff engineers and cross-functional teams to develop and validate new sports medicine devices and implants.• Developed new All Suture Anchor (Feasibly, Concept, Prototyping, and Verification testing).• Used SolidWorks to develop the Gryphon Assembly fixture that decreased production time by approx. 40%.• Conducted pressure film testing using Tekscan sensors to compare DYNACORD’s compressive forces to competitors and subsequently published a white paper containing findings. • Designed Test Methods and Protocols and performed Test Method Validation to complete verification testing for the RIGIDLOOP Adjustable and Free Button Implant.• Assisted in surgeon validation and usability labs to understand customer feedback and patient safety. • Finalized validation for DYNACORD on Healix Advance anchors and the rest of the DYNACORD family as well as verification testing to transition from black nylon to black dyneema using Instron and MTS testing.PATENTLead Inventor on Pending Patent for Depuy Synthes Mitek, December 2018

Research Assistant In The Laboratory For Advanced And Multifunctional Polymeric BiomaterialsNortheastern University Sep 2017 - Jun 2018Boston, Ma, UsWe are working to adapt the properties of cryogels in order to allow for more versatile use throughout the body and, with the addition of stem cells, create a wound closure treatment.• Conduct trials on prevention of dopamine oxidation with varying antioxidants.• Run mechanical testing of cryogels (tensile, compression, sheer) using an Instron Mechanical Tester.• Perform adhesion testing using ASTM Standards for Sheer Stress, Burst Pressure, and Wound Closure using porcine skin as a wound model. • Design cryogels using APS/TEMED co-initiation chemistry into various shapes and sizes that can be compressed to 90% of their original volume.• Future steps: conduct cell studies to ensure viability within the cyrogels (ELISA, media preparation, cell imaging).Publication: Rana, D., Colombani, T.
