Samantha is currently pursuing their Master's of Public Health at the University of Michigan's School of Public Health in the department of Health Behavior and Health Equity. Alongside their MPH, they are also learning Brazilian Portuguese as a two-time recipient of a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship. In addition to learning Brazilian Portuguese, Sam is fluent in Latin American Spanish and continues to refine their language skills as a bilingual research associate with Michigan's Center for Global Health Equity.Prior to 2023, Sam lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There, they conducted a 10-month public health research grant and medical anthropological case study designed to elucidate the efficacy of Argentina's unique "Ley nacional de salud mental N°22657." This grant was funded by the Fulbright Program.Before Sam's Fulbright, Sam graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a B.A. in Philosophy and Bioethics, Honors in 2019. Additionally, in 2019, they were awarded the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, a fully-funded, independent, purposeful year abroad. Their project was designed to explore the different ways policy, law, medicine, humanity, and philosophy intersect within international/global mental healthcare systems.They are always eagerly seeking exciting inter- and transdisciplinary opportunities to expand further and apply their knowledge of medical anthropology, bioethics, mental healthcare ethics, mental healthcare policy, and healthcare ethics/policy (broadly conceived) in a meaningful way.
