I recruited patients, managed a sample database, performed experiments on human blood and tissue samples. I investigated the systemic immune activation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and correlated this with observed activation in HIV patients. Further, I assessed the location and severity of intestinal permeability in HIV patients and sought to link these findings to markers of immune activation and microbial translocation.
