Non-destructive 3-D internal stress reconstruction, such as Photoelastic Tomography was the main subject of this PhD research.This research aimed to experimentally assess the mathematics and the tensor stress reconstruction algorithms developed by researchers of Applied Mathematics specialized in Inverse Problems from the University of Manchester to obtain quantitative measurements of the 3-D internal stress in birefringent materials. The research began with a critical audit of an existing rig used in previous preliminary research of Szotten’s method.As a result of this audit, essential and considerable improvements were made to the photoelastic tomography apparatus, methodology and software. In this work, an automated repositioning system and associated control programs were designed, manufactured and commissioned to avoid contamination of the matching fluid that introduce noise into the results.In addition, the post-processing of the acquired images was also improved by the development of algorithms that automatically detects the edges of the specimen to cut the unnecessary background information not related to the sample to save computational time.

During my PhD I had the opportunity to work as a teacher assistant. I found this experience very rewarding for many reasons. First because I developed confidence in assisting and leading others in their learning process. Also because this experience granted me the opportunity to work in team with the lecturers and with other teacher assistance colleagues. I provided the undergraduates with guidance, managed their time, explained technical content and supported them through the experimental lab work. As a result, I have also gained confidence in communicating concepts clearly in the multicultural teams.

During this masters year, I performed my research project in the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). The project dissertation was about the study of the effects of coolants with different delivery methods in two titanium alloys. This research led to a paper publication presented in an international conference. In this master’s I was particularly interested in Experimental Stress Analysis, Finite Element Analysis, High-temperature materials where I learnt the basics of composite materials and Advanced Materials and Manufacturing.

• Metpunch prototype:In partnership with the National Council of Science and Technology, (CONACYT), the Center for Engineering and Industrial Development (CIDESI) and the heavy trucks technology department I collaborated in the creation and implementation of a prototype that its main aim was to be a smaller, lighter and a cheaper version of the current punch presses in the production lines.-Main activities:3D Modeling and CAD animations for processes, mechanical,automation and control design, project managing between partners and integrators, quality validation, implementation and commissioning.• Implementation of new plant in Rayong, Thailand:Due to increments in the demand of the clients, the company growth its market in Asia in 2014.In this project my principal role was to implement a scalable plant that could be flexible enough to supply the clients need regarding quality and production but with the smallest inversion possible by searching to alternatives processes e.g. drilling instead punching, and implement them. -Main activities:Layout design,3D modeling and CAD animations of the processes, project managing from Mexico in Thailand to productionize the different productions cells (punching, drilling and welding) and Equipment transfer.
