I’m known for talking about difficult topics such as death, taboo, and trauma. In fact, I love talking about these topics. They are so important to overall wellbeing, and our understanding our ourselves, as well as others. The trauma of my brother’s death by auto-erotic asphyxiation, when I was 16, has shaped who I am and how I view workplace health and wellbeing. It is this which drives me to talk about the immediate and long-lasting effects of trauma on health and wellbeing, sharing my personal, and professional experience from my career in Crime Scene Investigation, to facilitate conversations and assist organisation in implementing processes that are both cognisant of trauma, and compassionate and supportive. I’m proud to be a a Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) manager and associate trainer with the UK’s leading work-related trauma and psychological health consultancy, training agencies such as Border Force, NHS, and British Transport Police, in TRiM, and sharing my expertise. While my journey into Workplace Health and Wellbeing was a little unconventional, my career in Policing, has helped me to develop a unique perspective, and extensive skill set. When I acquired an invisible illness, the challenges I experienced, both mentally, as well as physically, gave me a further viewpoint through which to approach workplace health and wellbeing. After being Chair of the Staff Network for Disability and Mental Health, I became the first Health and Wellbeing Advisor at the IOPC, where I was able to further develop my skills with a NEBOSH certificate, and Masters in Workplace Health and Wellbeing.Being the Founder and Director of my own company has provided me with incredible opportunities to discuss trauma, compassion fatigue, moral injury, and of course bereavement, and the role that workplace health and wellbeing has in supporting people, specifically with these concerns. It also affords me opportunities to mentor aspiring Health and Wellbeing Leaders, and assist organisations in understanding their data to aid the development of Health and Wellbeing Strategies that can have meaningful results. Whether I’m working with an SME or a podcast guest, I have to admit that I love talking about trauma.
