I made regularly scheduled calls to a vulnerable beneficiary in my local community with the aim of making a positive impact on their wellbeing in the form of friendly social interaction, particularly during the isolating COVID-19 outbreak, and to give general advice and guidance within my realm of knowledge. I received full training for this role, focusing on safeguarding, data protection and professional boundaries, and am responsible for alerting my volunteer manager to any safeguarding issues I identify while on the call. I also accessed additional training with NPTCVS to improve my ability to give advice and identify concerns, and have completed sessions focusing on domestic violence and wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic. I received excellent feedback from my beneficiary regarding the benefit of the calls and our rapport.

The Student Ambassador role involves working at open days, taking pupils on school visits around the campus and working at a call centre on A-Level results day speaking to clearing and adjustment applicants to the university. Ambassadors are vital to the running of university events on a logistical and promotional level. This has given me invaluable experience of representing an organisation with the tasks of giving helpful information and promoting the university to recruit prospective applicants by showing university life in a positive light. As a representative of the university, having a friendly, polite and professional manner was also essential when communicating with prospective applicants and their families to reflect favourably on the university.

I planned and delivered digital workshops aimed at school and college students with barriers to accessing university education, with the aim of empowering and encouraging them to consider it as a viable option for their future.

Took calls from prospective students and families hoping to gain a place at Cardiff University through clearing or adjustment. Some calls were challenging, especially during the pandemic, as many callers did not meet entry standards and I needed to sensitively reject their application over the phone.Working in the clearing contact centre required excellent computer literacy skills as I had to confidently switch between Netcall, Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business and university intranet pages in order to take calls, liaise with supervisors and colleagues, and process applications. I needed to work accurately and ensure that all details were logged correctly and the right applicants were rejected or accepted through the system.
