About Samantha Downs
I am an engineer with almost 2 decades of experience building, maintaining, deploying and managing software in a variety of environments. I have an exceptional ability to quickly understand and work with a wide variety of software systems - from embedded devices all the way through to data centre scale deployments. I have experience working with a number of programming languages including Rust, C/C++ and Python in a Linux/Unix development and deployment environment.I am currently working as a Production Engineer at Facebook where I have utilised my embedded experience to work on a number hardware/infrastructure adjacent projects. I developed tooling for managing a fleet of millions of OpenBMC embedded Linux devices distributed across multiple data centres and was instrumental in identifying and fixing a number of high impact issues with this deployment. I implemented the systems and tooling necessary to productionize a fleet of Video encoding ASICs and have also dabbled with managing a fleet of Cloud Gaming GPUs.My previous experience in precision Agriculture involved development of embedded software for user and machine facing interfaces (C/C++) for tractor ECUs that conformed to the ISO11783/ISOBUS CAN bus specification. I spent more than a few days debugging issues with a laptop and CAN dongle sitting in a tractor.

As a PE at Meta I have shifted my focus from single embedded device deployments to managing thousands - even millions - of embedded devices at datacenter scale. The two main projects I have worked on during my time at Meta have been OpenBMC fleet management and productionization of an in-house-developed Video transcoding ASIC. I have also been exposed to many server fleet related security issues and how these can be mitigated/managed at scale.

The main development language was C++ and the target platforms ran embedded Yocto Linux.As a senior software engineer I had a lot of autonomy in this role and this helped me to improve my confidence in solving complex problems independently.

Embedded Software Engineer
Designed, developed, tested and maintained application code for TruPath GPS receivers and ISO-11783/J1939 CAN libraries. The TruPath family of GPS receivers provided guidance and auto-steering functionality for a wide range of Agco, Fendt and aftermarket tractors. The CAN stack code I helped maintain ran on two target systems. The main vehicle ECU/GPS was a PowerPC chip running RTEMS RTOS, and the in-cab display platform was ARM, running Yocto Linux.
