Through my time working at the Kollege Klub I have gained essential skills necessary to pursue a career in communications. My main responsibilities include, overseeing front-of-house duties, assisting in executing in-house events, and processing hundreds of customer transactions each night with total accuracy. While bartending is not directly related to communications, it taught me how to work with other people and communicate challenges, how to manage an unruly or difficult client, and lastly, effective time management. These are all skills I will continue to take with me throughout my future careers.

Curb magazine is an award-winning student-run publication at UW–Madison. We focus on telling the stories of the Wisconsin community and the issues impacting our society today. As the Event Director, I worked with a team of six to fundraise for printing and distribution. This included advertising sales and COVID-friendly events throughout the semester. In all, we overachieved our initial fundraising goal by 20%.

During my term as Gamma Phi Beta’s Philanthropy Chair, I raised over $30,000 for our national philanthropy, Girls on the Run, and other charitable organizations. I planned and executed two large-scale events, including organizing logistics, timing and marketing materials. Our fall-fundraiser raised almost $20,000, making it the most charitable food-fundraiser at UW-Madison within the Greek System. This experience tied together my love for philanthropy and passion for communications.

Working as an intern for a non-profit allowed me to get the hands-on experience I wanted. During my time at Clean Lakes Alliance, the majority of my work consisted of designing and creating infographics and pages, using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. In addition, I also wrote and researched articles, created video advertisements, captured and edited videos on Adobe Premiere, and did data entry and Excel work to organize volunteers, events, and social media cataloguing.Through graphic design and copy, I was able to learn the science behind the Yahara Lakes (the five lakes surrounding Madison), a topic that was previously foreign to me. By stepping outside my comfort zone, I was able to grow and expand my knowledge past what I thought was possible. I am grateful to have worked with such a productive, creative and rewarding company.

WE International is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating sustainable change to address injustice and poverty within developing nations. During my time as their Social Media Intern, I managed digital marketing strategies on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook as well as developed and published marketing materials, including donor newsletters, email campaigns and other content as needed. Their mission made it essential that I find ways to effectively connect our online platforms with the population we were working to empower. Through working with a team in Uganda, I got a taste of international communications while also honing in on skills needed in any business setting.
