About Samantha Cheung

I am a passionate environmental biotech researcher who has conducted impactful research at the intersection of chemical engineering and biotechnology to increase the economic efficiency of microbial technologies for the energy, food, fashion and water treatment sectors. Reducing waste and turning it into valuable products is at the heart of my goals. I have expertise in: upstream microbial techniques such as optimizing conditions for bioreactor cultivation, maintaining aseptic cultures, and E. coli plasmid cloning; downstream purification techniques including solvent extraction, ion exchange, and filtration; analytical techniques including HPLC, NMR, and ICP-OES; and molecular biology techniques including DNA extraction, and qPCR.I believe that innovative solutions come from interdisciplinary and multi-skilled people. Academically, I have extensive training in molecular biology, bioprocess engineering, microbiology, chemical engineering, and environmental science. During my PhD, I applied molecular biology techniques to bioprocess engineering and developed a method to quantify dense complex communities in order to better control the bioreactor system. Furthermore, I invested a lot of my time developing my leadership, teamwork organizational, and communication skills by working on projects that have made a positive impact on the community. My passions include mental health advocacy, social justice advocacy, emotional intelligence, Ultimate Frisbee, and food blogging. I have been recognized for innovative problem solving, detail-oriented experimentation, strong communication skills, and leading teams to excel. My mission is to contribute to a circular economy that is not reliant on fossil fuels; one way to accomplish this is through sustainable biotechnology. I am always looking to connect and discuss with like-minded people!
