I was an extern at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation ("DEC") Region 2 office. This office is the biggest enforcement branch within the state of New York. I rotated with six attorneys, all who specialize in different areas of environmental law. The main focus of my job was consent orders. Almost all of the cases at the New York State DEC settle through a consent order. I would receive a case file, read through it, then draft a consent order and send to my supervising attorney. I was also asked to research some issues including Civil Procedure questions and Administrative Law questions. I was also able to sit in settlement meetings between New York State DEC staff and members of the community. I also was able to sit in a few settlement meetings in front of an Administrative Law Judge.

I worked on a Federal Case in the State of Maine concerning the trapping of Canada Lynx. My responsibilities included conducting research, drafting memos, and cultivating arguments regarding a reply brief. I gained experience with the Administrative Procedures Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the Endangered Species Act. The Environmental and Natural Resources Law Clinic also had weekly seminars where I received training on legal citations, case management, effective advocacy, citizens suits, professional responsibility, standing declarants, and conducting depositions.
