About Samantha Opp
I am currently working full-time as a special education teacher! My background as a piano teacher and Board-Certified Music Therapist lends me a unique and creative outlook on teaching diverse learners.I've been teaching piano for 18+ years and am passionate about finding ways to make music a long-term part of my students' lives. I seek to create a nurturing environment that fosters creativity, inspiration and growth.I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy. This background equips me to individualize lesson plans and adapt piano study for diverse learners.My students study a wide gamut of musical styles and repertoire - from Beethoven, to Lady Gaga, to music from students' own cultural tradition - based on their interests and musical goals. Contrary to a one-size-fits-all model, I believe that each student is unique in learning style, personality, and interests, and I tailor my lesson plans and goals for each student. I believe that success in piano learning is driven by three factors: an attentive teacher, an intrinsically motivated student, and a high level of parent involvement.As a Board-Certified Music Therapist, I worked in hospital, school, in-home, shelter, and nursing home settings with populations ranging from children (ages 4-18) and adults with autism, to emotional/behavioral regulation concerns, cerebral palsy, developmental disabilities, abuse/neglect, and cancer.
