About Samantha Ragland

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. As the Vice President of Journalism Programs for the American Press Institute, I am a connector and a collaborator leading a talented department for five. We believe we can impact the longevity of local news, in whatever form that news takes. On a micro level, this work looks like leading API’s efforts to promote cultural transformation and business sustainability in media, helping news organizations serve diverse readers and communities more effectively.A Southerner to the core, I was a former leadership faculty member at The Poynter Institute. My portfolio included being director of Poynter's flagship Leadership Academy for Women where I let that light shine on some of the most talented women working in media around the globe. I launched a new leadership program for women who media, Lead with Influence, for women who lead products, platforms and processes — not people. And I also co-directed the Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism fellowship program, which serves up to 60 early-career journalists across disciplines every year. Formerly Director of Digital Content Strategy for GateHouse/Gannett Media’s Florida Group, I was responsible for growing digital audience and acumen across 22 newspaper markets through niche products, alternate business models and accessible digital training. I am an award-winning newsroom leader whose first mission is clear: to give my team wings. The second? To ensure my future children — and their future children — have a local news source to call their own. I am driven by the belief that my generation, and those that come after, deserve a local news source with integrity, vulnerability, transparency and longevity. Every day, I am part of the reinvention of local news.I earned a Master’s in Journalism from Syracuse University where I was a Goldring Fellow and a Bachelor’s in Creative Writing from Western Kentucky. I've been in the media industry since 2013, and prior to, spent nearly six years as an adjunct English professor. In 2021, I began serving on the University of Florida journalism school's student advisory board. In 2018, I was selected as a digital media consultant for the ONA Local Speakers Bureau. I have also served as Poynter Guest Faculty since 2018. I'm an active member of and coach for digitalwomenleaders.com after being one of 28 women chosen for the 2016 class of the ONA-Poynter Women’s Leadership Academy.
