Profile bio

About Samar Khan

From the beginning of Summer 2021, following my completion of secondary school (along side beginning A-Levels), I began working at Taco Bell as a Team Member, consistently working with others to achieve a speedy service for customers, solving any issues too. As my first experience officially working, I was thankful to maintain the job with no issues. My first job strongly aided development in communication skills, reduced anxiety while talking to strangers, and allowed me to apply my vast set of skills in a fast-paced working environment. I would constantly have to maintain a level head during stressful peak times, while always ensuring to treat others with respect, despite any stress.Following my resignation in May 2022, I was successful in interviewing for a new job at the Doncaster Racecourse, in the role of a Steward. With it being my second job, after having worked consistently for a relatively long period of time, I was already confident working in a public setting – finding myself excelling in; my communication skills, my ability to ensure customer satisfaction, as well as de-escalating hostile situations (commonly arising in an environment well known for its drinking culture). Further to this, I have unofficially worked at a family restaurant, honing my people skills, while being able to confidently serve as a waiter and work to suit the needs of a customer. I've always worked hard and maintained a healthy work-life-study balance, which I find to be an integral part of my life as a full-time student.Furthermore, throughout my student life, I have consistently worked hard to achieve higher grades, while maintaining a positive relationship with all teachers and peers throughout this time. I have worked hard to remain motivated and found a focus in teamwork and communication with those who I work with – inspiring and pushing them to do their best. All of my work paid off at the end of secondary education; I received Grade 9's in Chemistry, Computer Science, and Biology, along with Grade 8's in History, French, Maths, English Language, English Literature and Physics. My success continued into June 2023, when I completed my A-Levels in Computer Science, Maths and Chemistry. In the present, I have begun my journey at the University of Exeter, studying a degree in MSci Computer Science – with intention to eventually work in the Software Engineering sector. So far, I'm already extremely proficient in programming with Python (especialy in the OOP programming paradigm), while also being quite familiar with HTML, CSS, SQL and Git.

Steward

Doncaster, England, United Kingdom

Since working at the Doncaster Racecourse, my job as a Steward has required me to be flexible across many different roles. These aren't limited to; keeping people out of areas they shouldn't be allowed in, helping ensure jockeys have their correctly numbered armbands, keep lookout for any hostile situations, and mainly, letting people into the Racecourse. This main role I've taken on of allowing people into the Racecourse is of major importance, as working at racedays you realise how major the amount of people who attend them is, on some days letting in many thousands of people (and even more during the St Leger). In this role, I've had to become adept at scanning very fiddly QR codes (which can be a major hassle depending on weather conditions), being able to de-escalate situations where customers are becoming rowdy (often due to the nature of drinking at the races), being very sociable and having a presence where I appear always happy to help with any issues that customers may have (be it needing directions, needing help entering, or simply being able to find answers to questions they have).

Crew Member

Doncaster, England, United Kingdom

As a Crew Member, I have done a variation of opening shifts, closing shifts, and everything in-between. My main job was as an opener, where I would have to be in at 6am on some days to unload deliveries, and while working at Taco Bell I have had 0 occasions where I was not punctual or had to take a day off without an appropriate amount of notice. Opening shifts are gruelling, having to wake up at extraordinarily early times to unload a large delivery, however, I have always stood up to the task successfully and never been late or failed to show up for a shift.Despite not having to due to my age at the time (16-17, I had also done a large amount of closing shifts, working until 2am on some nights, whilst tired, doing all the necessary jobs to achieve a successful close. These shifts taught me how to work despite sometimes feeling very exhausted, making sure to take the right amount of time on a break and allowing myself time to relax at home after a stressful day. Working as a crew member helped to increase my resilience under many stressful situations, while maintaing a politeness with customers (even when they may be rude toward myself or my colleagues).
