About Sam Ashken

Strategist on a mission to help brands take on new shapes and make iconic moves. I see strategy as the ability to spot thge subtle without missing the obvious. I'm obsessed with how the tools of branding - from format to design to experience to copywriting - can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, transactions into passions and commodities into icons. My career has taught me that funding flows towards great thinking and it flows via people. So I focus on both.I started my career in digital marketing, excited by the potential of the Internet. Discovering that I enjoyed being part of making ideas real, I moved from online media buying into more creative agencies. Both digital and creativity came together for me at Albion, at the time an integrated advertising agency. It was there that I started to think more deeply about brand, and there that I did my first brand innovation projects. The excitement about the digital world which fired my early career has stayed with me, and I have worked in and for technology start-ups.As I've done more brand strategy and brand innovation, I've realized that this is where my greatest strengths lie, in particular in generating specific and directional insights from big picture thinking. That said, I continue to think digital is THE major reality for most businesses to wrestle with - digital can be an accelerator or a mortal threat, depending on the skill and energy with which it’s embraced. While this is the role I am best at playing in a team, it's equally important to me to be working with people who are (much) better than I am at turning insight into specifics, be that brand design, digital experiences, campaigns or products. This is reflected in what my colleagues tend to say about me: that I'm strong at turning big picture thinking into specific directions; that I bring a lot of energy to any team I’m part of; and that I have a lot of respect for the skills of others.
