About Sam Gerstenzang

Co-founder of Boulton & Watt, the world's slowest incubator, as well as of our first two companies, Moxie and Meadow.Growing up, I thought I was going to be a filmmaker, but I started my career as a software engineer. Over time, I’ve realized what I’m best at is working with creative people to sort through complex, conflicting information to identify the most important things and then getting those things done, urgently."Sam is what you’d want in a partner. He’s both been willing to help with the 'dirty work' and has been essential in putting us in the right direction. He’s done this while having hard conversations / being blunt and also being empathetic / easy to work with" (Khosla-backed startup)

  • Meadow Memorials
    Co-Founder, Ceo
Meadow Memorials Jan 2024 - Present
A contemporary funeral home offering simple cremations, personalized memorials, and transparent pricing. We've served hundreds of families with an average 5/5 rating. Boulton & Watt's second company."There are not enough good words to say about Meadows Memorials. Both my mom and dad died within the last three months. No words for that. With my days filled with grief and my mind in a fog, Meadows Memorials took care of ALL the heavy lifting before and after their passings. The people who helped me are beyond professional. Their sincere compassion gave me comfort. Once my parents left our family, my trust in Meadow Memorial only grew, that is a blessing indeed. Thank you MM"

    Sidewalk Labs Sep 2015 - Aug 2017
    New York, Ny, Us
Sidewalk Labs was started by Alphabet to apply technology to big urban problems. My role spanned incubation (product, business strategy, hiring, BD, etc.), and investing. The Internet’s visual storytelling community. 140 million monthly uniques, 80 billion monthly image views. I was the first product hire, and ended up building and running the product and data teams from scratch, along with running the design team. Ultimately not the right culture fit, but some of the highest slope learning of my career and met a bunch of great people.
  • Andreessen Horowitz
    Partner
    Andreessen Horowitz Jun 2013 - Oct 2014
    Menlo Park, Ca, Us
After working at a number of startups (see below), this was my first "real" job after college. I grew out my beard to look older than I was. When I started, I had nearly no idea what I was doing but left with a much better idea. I underestimated how much this job and the people I would work with would teach me, most of which I realized only after I left. Outside of the GPs, I had the best "founder NPS", but this was mostly because I was terrified of failing. I led the investment diligence for Imgur (Series A), Offerup (Series B), Instacart (Series B), Gotenna (Seed), and a few others. I "sourced" Instacart, but it's difficult to give me any credit coming from a firm as great as a16z. I am also proud of my work on the companies where we ended up not investing, and one general partner called me the "Sherlock Holmes of deals" after some novel due diligence. But I also learned that great companies usually have something wrong with them, and it took me too long to realize this. I was a board observer on a handful of our portfolio companies, which did nothing for them but a lot for me.
  • Misc.
    Various
    Misc. 2006 - 2013
I'm very lucky. I'm dyslexic and this required significant time, effort, and patience from my parents to teach me to read, which I finally learned to do at age seven and a half. My aunt gave me my first computer at age 12, which let me participate in online forums and changed my life. My first jobs were all through introductions my mother made me. I worked hard, and was able to work at startups beginning at age 15 which I've continued to do since.Worked in engineering roles at startups like Buzzfeed, The Huffington Post, and Community Connect. Led development of creative and technical prototypes at Fourth Story Media, a children's digital media studio founded by a former senior Disney and Scholastic executive. Sourced and evaluated investments at Lerer Hippeau Ventures.
