Sam is an innovator with strong experience in mechanical systems, controls, and robotics. He has strong hands-on, problem solving, and analytical skills along with familiarity in industry tools such as Matlab. Sam received his Master of Mechanical Engineering degree in December of 2019 from Cornell University. In May 2019, Sam graduated magna cum laude with a BS in mechanical engineering also from Cornell. At Cornell, he focused on dynamics and controls using the final semester of his masters program to build a self-playing electric guitar. As a Mechatronics Engineer at ASML, Sam worked to create a Matlab model to estimate machine overlay performance from early-stage production measurements on DUV lithography machines. Sam also developed, ran, and analyzed test results for projects ranging from pneumatic system redesigns to trouble shooting reticle stage servo performance. Before 2019, Sam worked at DEKA Research and Development as well as Medtronic Vascular. At DEKA Research and Development, he worked on early prototypes for a new self-balancing, stair climbing wheelchair and reinforced machine shop skills while gaining familiarity with rapid prototyping, proof of concept models, and PTC Creo. At Medtronic, Sam worked in the Tooling Department to improve and fix the machines needed to manufacture guide catheters and gained valuable clean room experience.Sam was the captain of his high school's FIRST Robotics team working to build a 120 lb robot to compete in each year's regional and national competitions. He was a 2014 winner of the prestigious Dean’s List Award. Over the 5 years on the team, Sam played a lead role in the design, construction, and operation of each year's robot.Sam is an avid hiker, skier, and cyclist. He also works on several personal projects including knee detection for bike fitting, temperature regulation for homebrewing fermenters, and power outlet control based on retail electricity prices. His hobbies also include time-lapse photography, spending time on the water, and maintaining an antique Model A truck.
