Sam Donald is an award winning architect with demonstrated skills in variety of project types and scales and with interests in co-housing, sustainability, urban design and with a focus on placemaking and exploring the boundaries between public and private space and in extending the idea of the ‘third space’ where citizens can engage with their city and its citizens without the requirement of a commercial transaction taking place. Over recent years Sam has collaborated on a community led design project, exploring participatory processes aimed at enhancing a suburban landscape with the richness and intensity of the activities more typical of urban life. This involvement led to Sam becoming a Trustee of the Vogelmorn Community Group where he is actively involved in providing a welcoming space to support a wide range of activities, with specific focus on the VBC café, UPSTAIRS bar and the emerging DOWNSTAIRS Maker Space. Sam has had experience in a range of project areas mostly focused on residential (with a particular interest in Co-Housing) and hospitality (e.g. Loretta, Damascus) in both NZ, the UK and North America. Sam is an Associate and Registered Architect practicing at Parsonson Architects Ltd, a small design-focused studio on Cuba Street where he has been since 2005.
