I independently taught 1.5 hour classes at two schools, with over 40 students per class. Raised in the culturally diverse environments of Denmark and Canada, I sought an immersive experience to understand and compare cultural norms, language, and socio-economic disparities. Despite my stable education, the contrast with my parents' childhoods, marked by war and poverty, motivated me to explore life in the small rural community in Bangladesh from where my father originates. After high school, this sparked my interest to experience life in the small rural community in Bangladesh that my father is originally from. This drove me to connect with a rural Bengali elementary school principal to volunteer teaching English. During my experience, I saw how incredibly grateful the students were for the opportunity to attend school, something that I had taken for granted. I was disheartened to learn that only two of them would receive funding to be able to pursue post-secondary education. However, despite this they were deeply dedicated to the comparatively limited education opportunities that they have. The students were initially nervous to talk to me because I was a foreigner. However, by being approachable and supportive I was able to overcome their apprehension. As I earned their trust, they confided in me about their troubles and daily experiences - their father’s rickshaw breaking down, fights at home because of hunger, and their aspirations of seeing Beedesh (the Western world). This experience has not only deepened my cultural awareness but has also instilled values of gratitude, humility, and compassion. It emphasizes the transformative power of education and the importance of empathy in bridging cultural barriers. Show less
