Main Area of Expertise: Demographic and Social Statistics.Over 30 years of extensive experience in providing technical assistance to developing countries in the areas of statistical capacity building, and population and development project design, data collection, management, analysis and utilization in policy formulation and evaluation.Work experience spans senior scientific expert roles and consultancies at the British Office for Population Censuses and Surveys, the World Fertility Survey / International Statistical Institute, UNFPA, UN Population Division, UNICEF, WHO, UNSD, ILO, The World Bank, GCC, EC/Eurostat/MEDSTAT, MEDChild, and MED-HIMS.Designed and managed internationally funded projects in population and development data collection and analysis, and co-ordinated programmes of household population surveys in the Arab Region from inception to conclusion. Provided technical assistance to national statistical offices and divisions of health planning and primary health care at the ministries of health in the Arab region since the mid-1980s.Participated extensively in expert group meetings and workshops organized by UNFPA, The World Bank, UNICEF, UNSD, UN Population Division, WHO, ILO, ESCWA, IUSSP, The Arab League, MEDChild, EuroStat:MEDSTAT and MED-HIMS programmes, and UNHCR. Published widely on demographic patterns in the Arab region.Acted as academic adviser to research students reading for the degree of Ph.D. in demography and as external examiner for Ph.D. candidates at Oxford University, City University-London, London School of Economics, and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Also lectured at international, regional and national statistical training centres.
