I am a physician scientist who is deeply driven by my passion for unraveling the fundamental metabolic pathways governing the pathophysiology of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NALFD) and making significant contributions to care of my pediatric patients with advanced NAFLD through clinical research efforts.Within my basic science lab, our primary focus lies in studying how sugar metabolism, particularly fructose, plays a pivotal role in driving hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance. We have made significant breakthroughs by showing that fructose metabolism via ketohexokinase supports the progression of NAFLD via its kinase and non-kinase functions to support lipogenesis, decrease fatty acid oxidation, influence protein acetylation and trigger endoplasmic reticulum stress. Our research findings have been published in prestigious journals such as Cell Metabolism, Journal of Hepatology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Metabolism, and others, thereby contributing to the scientific community's understanding of fatty liver disease.As the founder and medical director of the Pediatric Fatty Liver Program at Kentucky Children's Hospital, I have been able to combine my expertise in both clinical care and basic science research to provide comprehensive and innovative solutions to young patients affected by fatty liver disease. I am dedicated to driving change in the field of hepatology and improving patient outcomes. By combining my clinical expertise, research acumen, and a genuine passion for advancing knowledge, I strive to make a lasting impact in the understanding and management of young patients with NALFD.
