About Samira Daneshgar Asl, Phd
Remote Sensing Scientist with 10+ years experience in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical remote sensing, image processing, automatic feature extraction, GIS, cryo-hydrologic remote sensing, oil spill remote sensing, and numerical modeling of oil slicks as a function of air-sea interaction. Investigator of the NSF funded project ICEBERG (Imagery Cyber-infrastructure and Extensible Building blocks to Enhance Research in the Geosciences). Developed an open source pipeline to classify supraglacial hydrological features on Arctic glaciers particularly the Greenland Ice Sheet utilizing high-resolution WorldView imagery and Deep Learning techniques. Published 7 papers in top-tier journals such as Remote Sensing of Environment. Currently, I am seeking a position that will allow me to further develop my skills in applications of remote sensing in environmental studies.
Listed skills include Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, Matlab, Research, and 21 others.

Imagery Analytics Product Engineer
• Applying remote sensing and imagery analytics experience to help Living Atlas of the World team build new and dynamic content. • Test and deploy imagery products to the Living Atlas of the World.• Develop, test, verify, and validate raster functions against imagery content to support industry groups analysis capabilities.• Teaching users how to leverage dynamic imagery content and image processing in new ways supporting natural resources, sustainable development, and government industries.
Postdoctoral Scholar
Responsible for developing a semi-automated algorithm to classify supraglacial hydrologic features on Arctic glaciers using high-resolution WorldView satellite imagery and Deep Learning algorithms.
Earth, Ocean, And Atmospheric Science Researcher
My research at FSU mainly focused on satellite image analysis and modeling oil spill advection and persistence as a function of air-sea interaction. I contributed research on chronic anthropogenic oil spills, natural seeps, and the BP/Deepwater Horizon surface oil in the Gulf of Mexico.
Graduate Research Assistant
I used analytical software packages (Matlab and ArcGIS), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, and modeled oceanographic data to:1) examine the feasibility of SAR images in oil slick detection,2) perform hindcast modeling for analyzing the temporal evolution of the natural oil slicks under the influence of wind and surface currents, 3) quantify the magnitude and distribution of surface oil in the Gulf of Mexico from the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) discharge, and4) develop a now-cast surface oil advection model which provides a quantitative and spatial estimate of where the oil slicks formed and dissipated in the Gulf of Mexico during the DWH discharge.

Satellite Image Analyst (Subcontractor)
Quantified the magnitude and distribution of surface oil in the Gulf of Mexico from the British Petroleum (BP)/Deepwater Horizon discharge using Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite images for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA).
Consultant
Developed an easily accessible tool for the Southeast to monitor drought to assist agencies such as the US Geological Survey in identifying areas that are more prone to drier conditions. Used level-3 surface reflectance, land surface temperature and emissivity data (acquired by Terra/Aqua MODIS), and precipitation data for the study period of 2008-2013. Estimated drought indices such as The Water Condition Index, Day-Night Temperature Difference Condition Index, Vegetation Drought Index, and Arid Index on a regional scale (Alabama and Georgia).
