High-performing scientist with >15 years experience in protein science, molecular biology, and microbial genetics as well as leadership experience in both academic and biotech settings.I am currently an Associate Director of Biology at Innoviva Specialty Therapeutics where I utilize molecular biology, various -omics approaches, and protein science methodologies to progress our pipeline. I am also Project Team Leader on an NIH-funded contract, directing biology tasks and working closely with the medicinal chemistry and DMPK teams. Previously, I was Principal Investigator on an NIH-funded post doctoral training grant investigating the role of integral-membrane proteases in Staphylococcus aureus cell division ($105,000+) and a contributor to a large multi-lab project grant ($5 million+). I am an effective communicator that has planned and executed several multidisciplinary collaborative projects with colleagues at several institutions. These projects have been published in high impact journals and have been presented at national and international conferences. My technical expertise includes:★ Biochemistry and Biophysics: recombinant protein expression, purification, and characterization, gel filtration/size exclusion chromatography using AKTA, protein interactomics, HPLC, FPLC, analytical ultracentrifugation, protein crystallization and X-ray crystallography, protein NMR, microscopy (light/fluorescence/electron)★ Microbiology & Molecular biology: bacterial culture, phage biology, genetics and manipulation of Gram +/- organisms, cell biology, PCR, construct design, cloning, DNA extraction and sequencing, genetic knockouts, random and directed mutagenesis★ High-throughput: Transposon mutagenesis mapping, RNA-seq, whole genome sequencing and data analysis, candidate gene identification, small molecule screening, bioinformatics★ Management and Collaboration: mentoring young scientists, leading team-based projects and experiments, proven record of successful internal and external collaboration★ Scientific writing: data analysis and figure preparation, study reports, manuscript and proposal writing and editing

Ruth L. Kirschstein Postdoctoral FellowHarvard Medical School Sep 2012 - Jul 2015Boston, Ma, UsAs a postdoctoral fellow in Suzanne Walker's lab at HMS, my goal was to determine the roles of uncharacterized putative membrane proteases in the division and pathogenesis of antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In addition to classical genetics, I used chemical biology and biochemical approaches as well as high-throughput transposon mutagenesis and whole genome sequencing of suppressors to determine the functions of these membrane proteases. -
Graduate Research Assistant And Chemistry-Biology Interface FellowTexas A&M University Aug 2007 - Aug 2012College Station, Tx, UsMy doctoral thesis work was performed under the supervision of Dr. Ry Young. While a member of the Young group, I was able to characterize both the mechanism of lysis and the regulation of lysis by bacteriophage T4 on genetic, biochemical, and biophysical levels. Specifically, I used random mutagenesis techniques to determine the essential domains and residues for holin function and also visualized the action of the holin in vivo using cryo-electron microscopy. In addition, I collaborated with the laboratory of Dr. James Sacchettini in an effort to solve the first structures of either a holin or its anti-holin partner. These structures, along with the genetic and biochemical study results, allowed us to form a model for T4-mediated lysis and its regulation.Complementary to my work on T4 lysis, I collaborated with the Luo lab at the University of Nebraska Medical Center to show that the mitochondrial protein Bax functions similarly to the membrane hole-forming lysis proteins (holins) from bacteriophages. This study was highlighted by F1000. -
