Acted as Study Manager for the Road Testing Programmes - a €1m Commission which included a highway condition survey and the development of a pavement design manual. The condition survey comprised the structural evaluation of 600km of road by FWD testing and 800km of MARCH visual condition survey. The results from these surveys were used to develop an overall pavement management system for future maintenance of the road network.

• Team Leader for independent geotechnical checking of major road construction projects for the Scottish Development Department. • Project Manager for tender design for the Skye Crossing and approach roads on behalf of Trafalgar House and the British Linen Bank.

This two year assignment included the preliminary and detailed design checks on a 40km section of the Anatolian Motorway between Ankara and Istanbul. The checks were carried out on a design prepared by the Contractor under the “Build Operate and Transfer” arrangements for the project and comprised a detailed review of the Contractor’s proposals to ensure cost effective and technically sound construction.

• Team Leader for the preliminary and detailed design of the improvements to the A830, Fort William to Mallaig Road between Lochailort and Loch Nan Uamh. • Team Leader for the design of Phase 1 of the Rosyth Naval Base submarine refitting facility project.

Site supervision of roadworks on a 7km section of a dual three lane motorway and associated side road diversions with particular responsibility for earthworks and the construction of the bituminous pavement.

• Supervision of ground investigations for the East London River Crossing and the supplementary ground investigation for the M40 Oxford to Birmingham motorway. • Detailed design and preparation of drawings and quantities for the substructures of two multi span over bridges on the M40 Oxford to Birmingham motorway. • Detailed design, using MOSS, of a major urban motorway interchange between the East London River Crossing and the A2.

Around one year was spent in the group to implement the MARCH pavement management system throughout the Division. Site supervision of resurfacing works on the Ulster M2 Antrim to Belfast Motorway. Studied for a degree in Civil Engineering at Queens University, Belfast over this period.
