This summer I was given the opportunity to work in the McKim lab at the James Hutton Institute. I worked with Dr. Sarah McKim's team on their current research project investigating the role of HvAPETALA2 (AP2) in coordination of maternal and filial tissue growth during grain development in barley. This involved reciprocal crossing of an allelic series of barley comprised of an AP2 knockout line and an AP2 overexpression line as well as the original cultivar from which they were developed, Bowman (Bw). Barley crosses were set up and successful grain was harvested, photographed, fixed, sectioned, and sent for light microscopy. I was able to experience all stages of the process but my internship finished before the light microscopy images arrived. I produced a poster based on my involvement in the work at the McKim lab and participated in a symposium for all of the summer school students at the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. I really enjoyed my time in the McKim lab and I thank all of the lab members for welcoming and supporting me.
