Profile bio

About Sam Modlin

I lead research that leverages emerging omics technologies by combining careful experimental design and data science principles to devise more effective and efficient methods of treating, diagnosing, and surveilling infectious disease.Currently, I lead the epigenomics and functional genomics research teams at the Laboratory for Pathogenesis of Clinical Drug Resistance and Persistence (LPCDRP), an NIAID-funded lab with the mission to tease out the genetic and epigenetic steps that lead to emergence of antibiotic resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the infectious agent causing TB. At LPCDRP, we generate and test hypotheses of how epigenetic and genetic changes affect virulence, antibiotic resistance, and evolutionary dynamics of M. tuberculosis with the ultimate translational goal of developing screening methodologies to identify promising new targets for anti-TB vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics, and clinical decision support tools.
