About Sam Phiri

Sam is a former journalist with the Times of Zambia and now Lectures and is the Post Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Zambia (UNZA). In those roles he teaches in, and designs some of, the undergraduate and post-graduate programmes within the Media and Communication stream at UNZA; UNZA’s Graduate School of Business; supervises post graduate students at UNZA; and is a promoter for the Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Media Studies - a joint programme of the UNZA Institute for Distance Education (IDE) and Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU). He belongs to the Committees of Experts of the Zambia Higher Education Authority (HEA); and the technical committee of the Governing Council of the Zambia Institute for Tourism and Hospitality Studies (ZITHS).Before joining UNZA, Sam was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services in Zambia; Director of Information and Public Affairs at Africa University in Mutare, Zimbabwe; Manager of the Media Programme at the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) in Johannesburg, South Africa; and Director of the Training Programme at the Nordic-SADC Journalism Centre (NSSJ Centre) based in Maputo, Mozambique. In these roles, he worked and lived across the SADC region. He was educated as a trainer of journalism trainers at FOJO, Kalmar University in Sweden; media researcher at Central European University in Budapest, Hungary; and attended some preparation in media and diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University in the USA.

Within a year, had initiated the transformation of the national news agency, the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) towards becoming a social tool for 'communication for social change;'​ and revamped the circulation strategies of the two state-owned newspapers (Times of Zambia and Zambia Daily Mail) so that they are able to reach the rural provinces, and increased their print-run from about 7, 000 to 20, 000 copies a day each. Introduced sign-language translation of major news events & bulletins at the State-owned broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation's (ZNBC)-TV and the use of local language Voice-pops on the English language TV channel as the first step towards a new language policy for the ZNBC. Undertook initial steps of transforming the Ministry of Information into becoming the authentic & credible voice of the Zambian government - a task that was never completed. Show less
