About Samantha Meyer

I am a proud Double Dawg, serving as the Director of Experiential Programs for the College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. I earned Bachelor’s degrees in Public Relations and Women’s Studies, and a variety of experience in public relations and community activism as an undergraduate student.I expanded my education both in and out of the classroom with my enrollment in the 4+1 program in Grady College. It is a unique graduate program that provided me the opportunity, as a Grady alumna, to earn my Master's in Journalism and Mass Communication with a concentration in Advertising in one just one academic year. This knowledge of the communications industry and of the UGA campus served me well in my role at the UGA Career Center as the Grady College Career Consultant. I bridged my Women’s Studies background with that role through serving on the office’s internal Diversity and Inclusion Committee to partner and collaborating with campus partners to serve diverse student populations on campus. After almost four years in the UGA Career Center, I moved into my current role within Grady College. I ensure all Grady students are meeting UGA's experiential learning requirement, and partner closely with faculty and the Career Center to connect students to internship and job opportunities in the industry. I sit on Grady's internal diversity committee, and also serve as the staff advisor for the Women in Media student organization.I am an ENFJ with high energy and a passion for contributing to my campus and local communities. Out of the office, I served on the Board of Directors for The Cottage Sexual Assault Center and Children’s Advocacy Center in Athens for six years, with a focus on branding and communications efforts for the organization.I would love to connect with any employer or UGA/Grady alumni interested in hiring communications students and alumni, as well as those interested in sharing advice with current communications students.

  • University Of Georgia
    Lead Career Consultant
University Of Georgia Jul 2016 - Oct 2018
    Athens, Georgia Area
As a Lead Career Consultant, I maintained all of the responsibilities of my previous Career Consultant role, in addition to leadership opportunities, such as supervision and mentoring.I supervised the office’s Career Development Intern (CDI) Program, which included five to six undergraduate interns from various majors on campus. I instituted the program goal of increasing CDI engagement in the office through a project-based model, mainly through utilizing the established component of matching our interns with an office mentor from our career consultant team. Going into my second year of supervising the program, I focused on expanding CDI engagement to assist with office-wide projects and resource creation, as well as focusing more on individual intern development and continuing training throughout the academic year.Another area of demonstrated leadership in the office was heading the Career Guide committee since summer 2015. Since then, I led a team of five to seven consultants in updating design, content and organization of the 52-page resource. For two summers, we re-designed the guide; I was solely responsible for layout design, utilizing Adobe InDesign. My last summer designing the guide (2018), we focused on incorporating student and Career Center staff suggestions for updated content. I also had the pleasure of serving as an office mentor to a colleague in the office, who I partnered with on office-wide diversity initiatives as it relates to career development.
  • University Of Georgia
    Career Consultant
University Of Georgia Dec 2014 - Jul 2016
In this role, I primarily served the career needs for all Grady College and pre-Grady students at UGA. I met with students on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: choosing a Grady College major, career options with chosen major, resume and cover letter updates, personal branding, creating digital portfolios, interview prep & mock interviews, salary negotiation, evaluating job offers and applying to graduate school. I met with students in various formats including: one-hour individual appointments, quick walk-in hours in the Career Center and quick drop-in hours in the Journalism Building. In addition, I presented general career workshops as part of the office-wide Arch Ready Professionalism Certificate, as well as industry-specific programming—mainly career panels featuring employers and alumni in the communications industry.A primary part of this role was building relationships with campus colleagues, particularly Grady College faculty and staff, to better serve career needs for Grady students. This included meetings with Grady colleagues, classroom presentations and inclusion in Grady College events where appropriate. The Journalism and Mass Communication Career Day was my main collaboration effort with Grady College. Partnering with the Grady College Director of Experiential Programs, I focused on student marketing and preparation, while my Grady colleague focused on employer relations. Together with our event partner, the Georgia Association of Broadcasters, we developed an employer sponsorship package to expand employer engagement during and after the event.A part of the office-wide diversity committee, I also assisted with serving the career needs for women on campus by partnering with the Institute for Women’s Studies on their programming where appropriate, and planning industry-specific “Women in…” career panels, featuring women employers and alumni sharing advice from their perspective and experiences as women in their chosen field.
