  • Reachmedia
    Chief Customer Officer
    Reachmedia Apr 2020 - Apr 2021
    Auckland Central, Auckland, Nz
We are transforming ReachMedia into a true marketing solutions business. People have known us for ages in the letterbox space, but it’s really just one of the many marketing solutions we offer these days. We realised a number of years ago that we needed to build a business that marketers and business owners could use as more of a multi-channel shop for running campaigns. And those campaigns needed to address the way people shop – which is moving between the internet and their physical world dynamically, and at pace.
  • Reachmedia
    General Manager Innovation
    Reachmedia Sep 2019 - May 2020

Over the last 3 years, ReachMedia has embarked on an investment program to transform the company from a distribution centric business to a data driven media organisation. The introduction of new media touchpoints such as mobile retargeting, and increased insight capability centre around ReachMedia’s core competence in “Location Intelligence”. As part of this investment program, a “Ventures & Innovation” division was established with the task to explore new capability and business partnerships that build on ReachMedia’s data rich ecosystem. My goal is to scale up the Ventures & Innovation division and am on a mission to grow ReachMedia into a global player in data analytics & audience measurement.

  • 42 Below
    Country Manager: Mexico
    42 Below Sep 2003 - Dec 2004
    Nz
42 Below was the dream of Geoff Ross - in 4 years it went from an idea on a long hall flight, to IPO, and then acquired by Bacardi. We took it to Mexico - Geoff tells the story in his book (Every Bastard Says No) rather well:"Mexico City came next. Like most big cities with an emerging international culture, Mexico City was dabbling cocktail culture. Geoff received an enquiry from an odd trio all working on their MBAs in Wellington that sounded like the start of a joke: 'A couple of Kiwis and a Mexican...' But they were smart, they were nice guys and they wanted to become our distributor in Mexico.Geoff handed the opportunity over to Mark, who did a deal allowing the three amigos the distribution rights to Mexico. The first order was for a pallet and the 42 Below delivery made it safely to our new distributors. But when the time came for them to order a container, alcohol hijacking had become a major issue in Mexico. And why not just get your grog at gunpoint as it passes through the village? So much easier than taking the donkey to town.Bacardi had lost three containers to bandits, we heard. 42 Below could not afford to lose stock: Justin Bade had suffered a big loss in London and these types of hits hurt a small company. The distributors organised an armed escort and truck from the seaport, all the way to a bonded warehouse in Mexico City. An armed escort sounds very flash but in reality 42 Below had a crappy old truck with a couple of poorly paid security guards hanging off the side. The truck broke down in a remote town. The joke was on us.The transport company report summarised what happened next. 'Locals started gathering around the container and things became tense. But they dispersed quite quickly at the sound of AK-47 guns being fired in the air.'

I often get asked if my MBA was worth it - I can sum it up easily:- Yes, if you want to climb the corporate ladder,- Yes, if you can get into a place like Singularity University,- No, if you want to start your own business - instead add up your fees, loss of employment, living expenses and bar tab for 2 years - then head to a SydStart, Startup Weekend or Y Combinator.
  • International Plastic Recycling
    Co-Founder
    International Plastic Recycling 1997 - 2003
This was a spin off from Scrapex where I partnered with a clever bloke called John Forbes. The business performed really well when plastic prices were depressed. John offered me a great deal so I exited and ever since I have watched plastic prices continue to climb...I told you he was clever - I now understand how to value a company.
  • Scrapex Recycling
    Founder
    Scrapex Recycling 1995 - 2003
I was playing Waterpolo in South Africa where I was well looked after by the Coetzee family. They also gave me a part time job working in a plastic recycling plant. When I returned to NZ I made some phone calls, realised that NZ wasn't very good at recycling, started collecting scrap plastic, loaded it into containers and shipped it back to South Africa - Scrapex became my first venture.
  • Cable & Wireless
    Commercial Manager
    Cable & Wireless 2000 - 2001
Global telcos made many acquisitions in the 90's and had no idea of the cost of their networks. I developed a commercial model that calculated the cost of a bit of data as it travelled around the world. The results fundamentally changed the way that C&W priced its data services.10 years later the NBN is starting to roll out - I think that they have a lot to learn.
  • Protx
    Consultant
    Protx 1999 - 2000
    Gb
I worked through the dot-com era where investors were trying to pick the next best thing.Protx was going to be what paypal has become. We had funding & a great team. Super Duper Consultants came in on silly money and changed the business model significantly. My gut feeling was that they had it wrong. Sadly, Protx burnt all their cash and are a wafer of what they should have become. I now trust my intuition.
