Phd Candidate Researcher
My PhD project at Volker Haucke lab in the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP) is focused on deciphering the molecular mechanisms of myotubular myopathy, a severe rare skeletal muscle disease caused by loss-of-function mutations in the lipid phosphatase MTM1. In mouse models, it has been shown that muscle-specific depletion of lipid kinase PI3K-C2β reverses the disease phenotype. However, the mechanism and specific role of PI3K-C2β in muscle remains unknown. The goal of my project is to identify this mechanism in order to establish a background for a potential therapeutic treatment targeting PI3K-C2β and understanding the function of MTM1 and PI3K-C2β in cells. My doctorate studies have been funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie (ITN) Fellowship Phd: PI3K Biology in Health and Disease from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. As part of the Network, I participated in international yearly conferences, training courses and many other scientific and soft skill activities.I have also been involved in teaching a one-week Cell Biology course within the Biochemistry Master’s program of the Freie Universität Berlin (June 2018 and June 2019). It consisted on designing, planning and setting up several experiments, teaching background on related topics, guiding and supervising the students in the lab and assessing the interpretation of results and writing of protocols.PresentationsITN Annual Meeting• Oral presentation (London, UK; Nov 2016)• Oral presentation (Cambridge, UK; Sep 2017)• Oral presentation and Poster (Berlin, Germany; Apr 2018)• Oral presentation (Barcelona, Spain; Feb 2019)MDC-FMP PhD Retreat (Brandenburg region, Germany)• Poster (Sep 2017)• Poster (Sep 2018)• Oral presentation (Aug 2019)MDC-FMP PostDoc Day - Poster (Jun 2019)Inositol Lipids in Health and Diseases. Visiting Phd Candidate Researcher
During my stay at Len Stephens lab, I performed phospholipidomic analysis of muscle cells taking advantage of the expertise of his team and the facilities available at the Babraham Institute.
Visiting Phd Candidate Researcher
At Jocelyn Laporte lab at the Department of Translational Medicine and Neurogenetics I characterized myotubular myopathy cellular models. I learned techniques and optimized protocols for working with muscle cells and gained insights into muscle and myopathy research from a translational perspective.I participated in group meetings and seminars, journal club and institute's activities and events.
Graduate Student Researcher
In my Masters thesis I continued and consolidated the project "TGF-beta in cancer glucose metabolism: PFKFB3 as a target gene" that I had initiated during my Bachelor studies, at Ramon Bartrons lab in the Department of Physiological Science of University of Barcelona. The project lead to the publication listed below (Rodríguez-Garcia A, Samsó P, et al. (2017) FEBS Journal). For pursuing my Masters thesis I was awarded the grant "Collaboration with University Departments" by University of Barcelona.
English Language Teacher
During my University studies I worked as a freelance teacher of English for young to adult students. I taught school support and complementary lessons, conversation and official certificate exams preparation from an elemantary to advanced level. My tasks consisted on gathering and selecting adequate learning material for each student, guiding and supporting them thorugh the learning process in a personalized manner, provinding resources for further learning, organizing schedules and studying routines and teaching language study techniques, among others.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
I was awarded a grant by Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer Foundation in order to develop my Bachelors thesis at Ramon Bartrons lab at the Department of Physiological Science of University of Barcelona, where I had worked as an Intern Student since June 2014.I iniciated a project in the field of cancer metabolism entitled "TGF-beta in cancer glucose metabolism: PFKFB3 as a target gene", that aimed to describe the mechanism behind the activation of the gycolytic enzyme PFKFB3 upon growth factor stimulation on a gliobastoma cellular model.
Summer Research Intern
After my second year as a Biomedical Science student, I had my first experience as a research intern at Francesc Ventura lab at the Unit of Biochemistry in the Department of Physiological Science. I worked on the early stages of a project characterizing the interaction between the transcription factors Runx2 and Osterix during bone differentiation.
