    Materials Engineer working on STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Fusion Energy). STEP is a staged programme to design and build the world’s first compact fusion reactor, based on the spherical tokamak, by 2040. The STEP programme will:- Create an investible concept design.- Understand the market and how the reactor will be built.My role as materials engineer included working on:- Reviewing and down selecting of the material candidates for the STEP vacuum vessel, this included investigating their performance at certain operating conditions (temperature, electromagnetic loads, hydrogen isotope exposure).- Reviewing materials for other components of the fusion reactor such as the blanket, divertor and inboard shield.- Leading the R&D and testing of neutron shielding materials.- Being part of the design team for the inboard neutron shield.- Reviewing nuclear engineering design codes and qualification such as ASME BPVC Section II and Section III and RCC-MRx and hence defining material development roadmaps.- Microstructural analysis through techniques such SEM, EBSD and XRD to understand materials microstructure and performance.- Mechanical testing including for ceramic metallic materials to ASTM C1161.- Leading the rollout of the internal materials database, including statistical analysis of non-irradiated and irradiated data.- Technical project management.- Defining and executing Irradiation experiments.- Planning and managing budgets.- Being a leader and managing people without formal authority.
