As a YPI Project and Cost Manager, Sam works with Clients to maintain budgets, project cost control and execute procurement for furniture, audiovisual, security, and IT project components. Sam also provides analytical cost management for construction requisitions and change orders across multiple YPI Collective projects.Sam previously worked as a research assistant, leading workshops in South America and creating his R-based code package that addresses uncertainty in georeferenced data. They have been involved in education outreach and support for community-based actions for sustainable land management projects encouraging ecosystem conservation.Sustainability, diversity, and equity have been driving interests for Sam. This research externship took place within the Marine Wildlife Flora and Fauna Rehabilitation Center at Machalilla National Park in Puerto Lopez, EC. During this externship, I was involved with and managed several projects. One of my primary responsibilities was the administration of medicine and physical therapy to several wounded and ill species within the Marine Wildlife Flora and Fauna Rehabilitation Center. I also monitored nesting and distribution of marine birds in the Plata Island and the effects of habitat interference. Finally, I assisted in ambulatory surgeries for homeless dogs and cats to curb overpopulation surrounding Machalilla National Park.

The Tiputini Biodiversity Station (TBS) is a biological field station established in Amazonian Ecuador in 1994 by the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in collaboration with Boston University. I worked as a field research assistant during a study focused on the reproductive behavior and social structure of spider monkeys (Ateles spp); findings included a better understanding of the relationship between river caudal region height with the fruiting tree paths used by Ateles spp. I also served as an ornithology field research assistant, where my primary responsibilities included assessing the condition of different regions within Tiputini biodiversity station, handling mist nets and the process of banding several bird populations.

I prepared reports analyzing soil and water data for the environmental viability of the Gulf of Guayaquil. I also conducted RNA sequencing, and the mapping of the virus influenza A using PCR and gel electrophoresis.

I worked at the National Center for Aquaculture and Marine Research (Centro Nacional de Acuicultura e Investigaciones Marinas, CENAIM), which fosters the sustainable development of aquaculture and marine biodiversity in Ecuador, and is located in San Pedro de Manglar Alto. I coordinated aquaculture developments, including phytoplankton production & embryology reproduction. I also performed microbiological analysis of shrimp farming pools and salt flats for invasive viruses and bacteria, and analyzed immunological celomic fluid and identified different cell types of the Isostichopus fuscus. I also extracted sex cells of the Crassotrea gigas for fecundation, and monitored the embryological development of the cells for further farming in open water.

I worked with the ESPOL Center for Biotechnological Research in Ecuador (Centro de Investigaciones Biotecnológicas del Ecuador, CIBE), which focuses on biotechnology research, conservation of species and development of broad-spectrum bioactive products. I performed phytopathology assays to identify bacteria, yeast and fungi on different samples from banana plantations on the coast of Ecuador. I also categorized samples of soils from the Antarctica to extract pure strands of ADN through PCR and gel electrophoresis to then identify the benefits they can produce in different industries.
