  Under the supervision of station manager David Cole, I created a show--"Saturday Night Bandstand"--to follow "Prairie Home Companion" (Garrison is a tough act to follow) and to initiate a sequence of Saturday Night shows, each celebrating America's indigenous art, jazz, with emphasis on "mainstream," the standards, and the most seminal musicians (i.e. Armstrong, Ellington, Basie, Hawk and Prez, Bird and Diz, Miles, Coltrane and Bill Evans -- but giving overlooked American masters--e.g. Hank Mobley, Tina Brooks, Carl Perkins the pianist with the withered left arm)--their due. Soon the show expanded to include the symbiotic art of American Popular Song (Berlin to Van Heusen) and the creators of the "Great American Songbook" (Crosby, Astaire and Sinatra; Ella, Sarah and Lady Day). Initially, the show was live, with callers invited to identify each of 35 different vocal performances of "White Christmas." On another occasion the artistry of Sinatra was demonstrated through six different recordings of Porter's "Night and Day" (1942-1982). More difficult for listeners: hearing the genius of Charlie Parker by comparing his "naked" 4-bar break on "Night in Tunisia" with the more reductive attempts by numerous other players. Re: music, people know what they like, but they can't enjoy jazz without some basic knowledge of chords and rhythm, blues and pop song structure. The challenge to the announcer is to squeeze it into a sentence or two.
