I had the opportunity to join the TUKHS laboratory team in the first year of the CLT position. Because of this timing, I was able to get great leadership experience in my first position out of college. I was able to work with management to write and revise SOP and training materials as the position was developed. I participated in preparation for CAP inspection and served as point of contact for technical support on several instrument problems. I have also helped to mentor and train four incoming CLTs so far.In my more regular duties, I process and culture a wide variety of organisms from patient species. I also run a variety of diagnostic PCR assays. I have run our antibiotic susceptibilities bench. I continue to read and interpret patient gram stains and many rapid antigen card tests.

In Dr. Swords lab I learned graduate level science and practical microbiology skills. I developed a co-infection model of non-typable Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae in mice. For that project I developed cell culture and animal modeling skills along with critical basic microbiology techniques.I was able to learn other important skills from my time in the lab working with other students. I was also involved in studies using a chinchilla model. I was able to teach a rotation student the basics of work in such a lab and the necessary scientific and technical skills. Critically, I had the opportunity to work with all the students in the lab to develop together as scientific communicators through classwork, presentations, and grant writing.

While working in Dr. Saul Honiberg's lab, I learned the basics of research science. I contributed to a model of colony boundry formation in yeast and was published for that work. I also participated in and refined the criteria for a large-scale mutant hunt. I am particularly proud of the mentorship I was able to contribute to this position. Dr. Honigberg emphasizes giving his students the opportunity to teach. Under that system, I was able to mentor two junior students. I worked with them through learning the basics of laboratory techniques, participating in the rigorous protocol for our mutant screen, and eventually helped them understand the boundry formation project sufficiently to propose their own experiments and refinements to the model.

I worked one on one with students on papers from a variety of subjects. I also taught history associated study skills and test preparation. In addition to individual work, I also assisted students in large group activities such as peer review and the International Write In. This opportunity taught me how to teach respectfully to students at all levels of expertise while discussing content from many different fields.

Supplemental Instructions Leaders at MCC work directly with one professor to aid in running in class activities. They are also responsible for organizing and leading out of class sessions that review and reinforce the content covered in the course. In this position I learned about teaching English writing and communication skills both one on one and in larger groups. Working in this role greatly improved my ability to teach complex concepts to an audience of varied skill levels.
