About Samuel Garvey

I found a pattern, and therefore a niche in my work history. You're a small company trying to become a medium sized company or division in a larger company. About 100 people. Maybe you just got bought, or maybe you just landed the big client that lets you expand. Your business involves circuitry, but that's probably not the core of the product. You're product is about some medical technology or novel software, maybe even AI. But you do have some custom circuitry and it's been put together haphazardly. The guy who designed it left years ago, and his notes are sparse. You're trying to scale up but are drowning in maintenance and production issues because your electrical design was good enough for a startup, but it isn't good enough for scale. The recent news with getting bought/landing that client means you finally have some resources to do things right, or at least better. You hire me because untangling spaghetti wiring, rewriting schematics for legibility, creating processes for version control and lifecycles, and tirelessly, continuously improving your product is what I do.

Samuel Garvey Work Experience Details
  • Wabtec
    Electrical Engineer
    Wabtec Dec 2021 - Present
BeenaVision, now part of Wabtec Corporation shines lasers and cameras at trains and then uses AI to look at the pictures and find maintenance problems. As the electrical engineer my role has three parts:1) Project based solutions using our current generation tools, technologies and architectures. 2) Product based continuous improvement efforts. Isolating compartmentalized pieces of our current generation technologies and upgrading them for manufacturability, maintenance and future proofing while retaining forwards and backwards compatibility with the rest of our systems.3) Ground up design work for the next generation of tools, technologies, and architecture. This work has exciting and varied challenges. Data must be moved at high speed with tight timing and synchronicity. Lasers require fairly high current loads and elaborate safety interlocks. The railway environment involves extreme levels of vibration, exposure, weather, and EMF. As with all things electrical there is a need for miniturization, but our sites include cable runs in the tens of meters. There is always a push for productization and the economies of scale that can unlock, while at the same time every site is different and often requires a project based approach.
  • Andersen Sterilizers
    Electrical Engineer
    Andersen Sterilizers Oct 2020 - Dec 2021
    Haw River, Nc, Us
Electrical Engineer addressing a wide variety of challenges in a small manufacturing setting. Responsible for everything from maintenance and upgrades to three phase industrial equipment to high speed circuit board layout for product development. Some software development (C, C++), validation, engineering change orders, and even drawing on my chemistry background to troubleshoot chemical processes.
  • Baebies
    R&D Engineer
    Baebies Jan 2019 - Mar 2020
    Durham, Nc, Us
I was part of the team doing testing, troubleshooting, and documentation trying to bring Baebies' next product, Finder, to market.I also worked extensively on SEEKERS (another baebies product) troubleshooting instruments that did not pass qc or customer complaints.
  • North Carolina State University
    Research Assistant
North Carolina State University Jul 2017 - Jan 2019
    Raleigh, North Carolina, Us
I did hardware and software support and design for Dr. Birgand's water quality lab in the department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. As part of this effort we were able to spin off MultiplexO LLC, an NCSU affiliated startup company. MultiplexO designs and fabricates innovative water quality sensing solutions for research labs.
  • Self-Employed
    Student
    Self-Employed Oct 2016 - Jul 2017
I'm shoring up my electronics skills with online classes and two independent projects. In one I'm working on a telepresense robot to further hone my skills with digital communication, PCB layout, and the use of ATMega chips. In the other (which is taking up the majority of my time lately) I'm working on a fallout-themed vacuum-tube based FM radio transmitter. This has been teaching me about high voltage ac and dc applications, rectification and smoothing, analog circuitry, AC circuitry, and rf. Also, I'm making it a work of art. Attached is a link to my google drive folder with all of my photos of the transmitter. I will update the folder as I make progress.
  • Css-Dynamac
    Chemist
    Css-Dynamac Aug 2014 - Sep 2016
    Fairfax, Virginia, Us
This is really just an extension of my work With Alion Science and Technology. Alion lost it's contract with US-EPA, Jacobs Engineering and CSS-Dynamac won it and I have continued my duties as normal under the new management. In recent years the nature of my duties has shifted almost entirely to electronics and software. "Enigneer" might be a more apt title than "Chemist." These days I primarily design, build and program multi-sensor packages of low-cost air sensors for citizen science.
  • Alion Science And Technology
    Associate Chemist
Alion Science And Technology Jun 2009 - Aug 2014
    Mclean, Va, Us
At Alion I supported multiple ongoing projects in the Human Exposure and Atmospheric Sciences branch of the EPA. From 2009-2012 this work was primarily as a chemist, but starting in 2012 I was transferred to working primarily with electronics design and software development.
  • Cormetech
