Studied the role of CD44 protein and its ligand hyaluronan in transformed epithelial cells. CD44 is essential for normal skin homeostasis of hyaluronan, which is one of the essential skin moisturizers. It is overexpressed in cancers with basal/squamous (skin-like) differentiation, e.g. basal-like breast carcinomas and lung squamous carcinomas. Discovered that CD44 is essential for collective migration and metastases initiated by loss of Rb tumor suppressor in breast carcinomas and also essential for growth of lung carcinomas.
