I believe art is finding the harmony of beauty and function.Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, I learned very early on to appreciate and love being around and learning from so many people of different cultures and perspectives. When understood correctly, the differences never felt at odds but were excitingly harmonic: never diminishing each other but together forming something wholly new and awe-inspiring.Little did I know that such a fundamental experience would extend to my professional career in the fusion of art and information technology.When I first started coding, I struggled heavily. Coming from a purely visual and digital art background, I saw lines of code as only functional, but I could not see how they were really creating anything—especially anything “artistic.” After my brother showed me some basic lines that formatted the output, I quickly saw the digital canvas that coding could be, and that changed everything. Formatting became composition, functions and methods became strokes, and variables became brushes. I could see, and now incorporate, beauty into the code, and as I did so, I found that the two enhanced each other, resulting in an output that was more pleasant to interact with, easier to understand, and proved functional beyond the bare minimum.For the rest of my IT college and professional career, I truly never left my artistic side but carried it with me in the added form of technical craftsmanship. It led me to believe that any work, especially technical work, can be seen as art when the harmony of function and beauty is understood.Whether it was the websites I’ve built, systems I’ve designed, pieces I’ve drawn, films I’ve edited, or stories I’ve written, I strive in all of them to find that harmony that brings the best work out of me, and I will do the same at my next professional venture!
