He graduated with honors and was awarded Alpha Omega Alpha for his academic performance. He then went on to complete a general surgery internship and ophthalmology residency at the San Antonio Military Medical Center, the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the US Department of Defense, where he achieved 95th percentile on the national Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program. During his residency, Dr. Hobbs was elected as chief resident and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for Outstanding Achievement for his service to the ophthalmology department in revamping scheduling capabilities at two separate medical treatment facilities, recapturing countless hours for patient care operations. His numerous peer-reviewed publications and podium and poster presentations earned him 1st Place for Housestaff Scientific Research. He was elected as the sole ophthalmology resident to serve on the national ACGME Review Committee for Ophthalmology to review programs, accreditations, and participate in other ACGME business. Dr. Hobbs was then selected for very competitive vitreoretinal surgery fellowship training at the prestigious UCLA/Stein Eye Institute, where he was awarded the Fellow Teaching Award. He is now the Chief of Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Wilford Hall Eye Center. When Dr. Hobbs is not at work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and four children. He is an Eagle Scout, plays the viola and guitar, has authored two books, loves teaching and academics, and is actively involved in his church.
